Eletrobras Eletrosul celebrates today (1st) the completion of the expansion work of substation Missões, in São Luiz Gonzaga (RS). The work has received investments of R$ 35.8 million, generating around 150 jobs, both direct and indirect. The venture, which aims to expand the capacity of the substation, had as main achievement the sectioning of the transmission line at 69 kV Passo São João - Missões, which will distribute the power produced by Passo de São João plant. The plant will serve 160,000 homes. The line, which will be 33.5 kilometers long and will have 101 towers, will cross the counties of Dezesseis de Novembro, Roque Gonzalez e São Luiz Gonzaga (where the Missões substation is installed), and is scheduled for completion in September 2010.

The project also included the deployment of two three-phase transformers 230/69kV of 50 MVA each, which were added to the existing one (also of 50 MVA), and complementary arrangement of 230 and 69 kV yards.

In 2008, the Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency (Aneel) auctioned the venture, which lot was won by Eletrobras Eletrosul. At the time, the Missões substation needed to be adequate to the network procedures of the Operator of the National Electricity System (ONS) and had only one 50MVA transformer, which was insufficient to meet the production of the future plant.

Santo Angelo Substation is 10 years old
Also today, Eletrobras Eletrosul celebrates a decade since the construction of Santo Ângelo Substation, located in a town with the same name, also in RS. A commemorative event will take place at 10am at the very substation.

At that time (late 1999), the state suffered serious energy supply problems and there were power shortages, which reached 600 MW. The establishment of the substation happened in just eight months – a record time – due to the efforts and studies performed by the government of Rio Grande do Sul, which expanded the power supply to the Região das Missões before the summer of 2000.

The seriousness of the problem in Rio Grande do Sul made the federal government authorize the deployment of the substation of 500/230kV, responsible to connect the Garabi converter station to Itá substation, in addition to the 230kV feeds to the Santo Ângelo 2 substation; São Borja e Massambará, all to improve the quality of power supply in RS. The construction of the project began in April and was completed on December, 23rd 1999.
